Paige Voight’s Late Game Heroics Leads Team Blue To Victory

Paige Voight’s Late Game Heroics Leads Team Blue To Victory
July 16, 2020

Unlike the previous two weeks of the Elite Women’s Summer Hockey League, week 4 was a very competitive affair inside Cyclones Arena between Team Red and Team Blue. This time Team Blue gets the victory by a score of 4-3 as Paige Voight scores the game-winning goal late in half number two.

With the game tied at 3-3, Voight picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and found herself in on a breakaway on Team Red goaltender Caty Flagg. Voight did not hesitate as she put one past Flagg to give the Blue team the lead at the 18:00 mark of the second half. Voight was given player of the game honours as she recorded a goal and an assist. Team Blue held on during a frantic finish thanks to their goaltender Brittany Ott.

Ott bounced back nicely after a rough outing in Week 3 for Team Blue. She started the second half this week for Team Blue, replacing Jetta Rackleff. Ott only gave up one goal this week and held on for dear life as Team Red was pressing for the equalizer late in the second half. Her biggest save came on Haley Skarupa. Skarupa was at the side of the net and Ott stuck her pad out to keep Team Blue ahead by a goal.

From opening puck drop there was a different feel to this game. But you wouldn’t know it when Team Red opened the scoring early into the first half on a goal by Alex Carpenter. It was Carpenter’s league-leading fourth goal and at the time her league-leading fifth point. Heading into week Carpenter was tied was Emily Field and teammate Gillis Frechette with three goals. Carpenter is just on a different level when she is out on the ice for Team Red. Anytime the puck is on her stick, Team Blue has to watch out.

Katie Burt was back in net for Team Red and she played another excellent first half. However, she would like to have the only goal she gave back. After Team Red scored two minutes into the first half, Team Blue answered four minutes later on a goal by Maureen Murphy. Murphy took a shot that just squeezed by Burt. Considering the way Burt has played the last two weeks, this was an uncharacteristic goal for her to give up.

Team Blue peppered Burt as they had done the previous two weeks with Courtney Turner leading the charge. Every time she was on the ice Turner was making something happen, but could not get the puck past Burt.

Just like previous weeks, Team Red scored late in the first half on the first of two goals by Finley Frechette. Getting the assist was Gillis Frechette, who recorded the assist, tying Carpenter for the most points in the league with five. Last week, it was the Gillis Frechette show, this week Finley took center stage.

As the second half began, it was Team Blue who got the early goal. It was another fluky goal by Maureen Murphy that snuck by Flagg. Then Hayley Scamurra making her debut this week, got her first goal of the season to give Team Blue their first lead since week 1 with Voigt picking up the assist. It was short-lived as Finley Frechette picked up her second of the night to tie the game at 3-3.

Then with the clock winding down Voight potted home the eventual game-winner to give Team Blue their first victory since Week 1.
