Team Blue Ends First EWSHL Season With A Win Thanks To Paige Voight
August 6, 2020

The final week of the Elite Women’s Summer Hockey League season is in the books with another exciting game between Team Blue and Team Red. Team Blue ends the season on a high note with their fourth straight victory over Team Red winning by a score of 2-1.

The hero of the game for Team Blue was Paige Voight. As she did prior in the season, Voight came up with the goods when her team needed her the most. It was another multiple-point night for Voight contributing to both Team Red goals in the first half. Voight scored the game-winning goal for Team Blue late in the first half along with assisting on the opening goal for Team Blue. Voight ends the season as the league’s leading scorer with eight points (four goals and four assists) in six games.

The story of the game was the great goaltending from Team Blue stonewalling the high powered offence of Team Red. During Team Red’s two-game winning streak, everything was going into the net, but during their four-game losing streak to close the season, they could not buy a goal. Brittany Ott got the start for Team Blue. She was excellent picking up her second win of the season. Ott had to come up with the big saves with her team-leading 1-0 robbing Kate Holmes on a breakaway. She also stonewalled Alex Carpenter multiple times to keep Team Red off the scoresheet. For the season Ott finished with a 2-1 record.

On the other end, Dana DeMartino started for Team Red. She played well for Team Red in the first half. She was peppered early and often and surrendered two goals on the night picking up her first decision on the season. DeMartino kept Team Red in the game, but the offence just could not convert on their chances. She finished the season with an 0-1 record. Caty Flagg played an excellent game coming in the second half for DeMartino. Flagg recorded a shutout and robbed Kate Annese, which kept it a 2-1 hockey game. But have to give up to these goaltenders as they gave it everything they had in the final game of the season.

Just like the previous games, Team Blue opened the scoring on Meghan Turner’s second goal of the season with Voight picking up the assist. It was a back and forth game until late in the half when Voight picked up her fourth goal of the season to give Team Blue a 2-0 lead heading into the second half.

Team Red found life midway through the half on Kali Flanagan’s second goal of the season. From there Team Red started to dictate the play, but only the play of Jessica Strack kept them from getting the equalizer. Strack took over for Ott in the second half. Strack made some unbelievable saves with Team Red pressuring late in the second half to tie the game. In end, the Team Red came up short one goal short.

On the season Team Blue finishes with a 5-2 record while Team Red finishes with a 2-4-1 record.

Thanks to all those who followed along this season and see you next year.
